Colour Palette Decor Consult Before And After

Creating a colour palette that is expressed throughout a home is a beautiful way to connect the spaces and give you a purposeful, professional look. It’s what gives us flow, which simply put, means making an easy transition from one room to the next room and continuing throughout the home.

With this colour palette decor consult before and after project, we did exactly that and have a beautiful end result that you’ll see in the videos below.

We looked at all the rooms that were next to each other on the main floor for common colours and tones. We determined the jumping off point as the beautiful artwork featured over the sofa. It was a gift from Mr. Client’s parents that the couple loved.

We talked about the colours they like and the feel of the space they wanted as we reviewed the pre-consult questionnaire together.

Then it was time to create a colour palette that would incorporate all of these discoveries and use our findings to apply the palette throughout the space.

How To Pick Colours And Create Your Own Colour Palette

  • I recommend that you pick three colour groups that you like, along with a neutral white or off white. I finding anything more than three can be a bit distracting and make you feel overwhelmed. Of these three, the one you like best will become, for this exercise, the living room wall colour.

  • Deciding on the feel of your space will direct you in knowing how light or dark that colour will be. Think peaceful, cozy, dramatic, which would be medium or darker tones, or you might prefer something light and airy, which would be the lighter tones.

  • Being careful with undertones, you will now choose which neutral white or off white looks the best with all three of your chosen colours. Lay them all out beside each other and give it your critical eye.

  • Apply your choices in different combinations throughout the main living areas of your home for a pulled together, professional look and feel. You might use one colour as a focal wall, and another colour for accessories for example.

Mixing Decor Styles

This consult was a referral from a couple that I absolutely love. It was so nice to meet their family and have them as clients as well. We started last summer, and with a lot of life in between - DIY painting (love it), busy work schedules, vacations, and more life, it wasn’t until mid October that I was able to capture the “after” video you’ll see below.

We had some great pieces to work with and a client with a great eye for decorating herself. As is often the case, we were challenged with mixing decor styles that each of them preferred.

Mr. Client loved a traditional sense of style and Mrs. Client who was all contemporary. My job is to find that middle ground that works for them both and works in the space itself. One way to do this is with a well chosen, uncomplicated colour palette.

Keeping an antique corner cabinet in dining room that was handed down to Mr. Client was important to him. By moving it to the corner opposite the most used entry, it became a more important piece that was accessorized to suit the room. It looks fabulous next to the more contemporary artwork on the adjacent wall.

This project embodies a lot of what I do when I’m tasked with updating a space. We assess, reuse existing pieces when possible, create a cohesive colour palette, dress windows (you know I hate naked ones), recover toss cushions, add new furnishings and art as needed.

We had some great pieces to work with and a client with a great eye for decorating herself. Typically, we also had Mr. Client with a traditional sense of style and Mrs. Client who was all contemporary. My job is to find that middle ground that works for them both and works in the space itself. Have a look and see how this one turned out.

The Design Plan

Working with a floor plan and my 3D decor visualizer really helps my clients envision possibilities for their space, how paint colours will look, which furniture style and layout will work best. Creating a plan is an important step to a successful outcome. For this colour palette decor consult before and after, the concept drawings proved to be a great help to both of my clients as we crafted the decor plan.

Decor Consult Walkthrough Reveal

The tour showing you how things looked after the project was completed is in the video below. The clients have future plans to paint the entry and hallway walls to continue with the new palette and updated contemporary look and feel.

The master ensuite shower is never used, which explains the comments and reason for taking down the shower curtain.

Eventually some new artwork of proper scale will go over the bed in the master.

If you have a space needing an updated look and feel, with the perfect paint and accessory colours while reusing some of your existing pieces, I’m ready to help. Maybe your project will be my next colour palette decor consult before and after to be featured on my blog.
