Master Bedroom Ideas 2021

Master bedroom ideas 2021 has to offer are sure to give you ideas for creating the perfect retreat space for relaxing and a great nights sleep. A bedroom planned with purposeful design harmony will create a sense of serenity, a key element in any principal bedroom space. Design harmony ensures wellness and health by affecting us emotionally and chemically.

The right design and decor can help you wake up feeling happy in your space and set the tone for the rest of your day. I get a bit of that every morning by making my bed! Equally important, at the end of a long day we want the comfort and relaxation a “retreat from the world” bedroom provides.

Design Harmony For The Bedroom

Keeping that in mind, let’s look at these key factors to consider when planning design harmony for your own master bedroom ideas.

  • Focal point

  • Headboard

  • Paint Colours

  • Accent wall

  • Flooring

  • Lighting

  • Storage

  • Accessories and decor

Bedroom Focal Point Ideas

Every room has one. Focal points are fundamental in any interior design project. In a bedroom, the bed itself is always the focal point. You want it to be the where your eyes go first when you come in to the room. Invest in a statement bed!

Ideally the bed is placed on the wall opposite the entry door. If your room layout won’t allow for the bed being opposite the entry, try to place it on the next best wall that allows for good visibility.

Don’t be afraid to position your bed on the window wall, even if it hides a bit of the window itself. Treat your window with sheer panels and you can easily place your bed under and/or on the window for the perfect layout.

Headboards - Is The Tufted Bed Out Of Style?

A headboard really finishes the look of a bed and is a great way to reinforce or create your focal point. There are so many to choose from. Keep the style and colour palette of your room in mind, narrow it down to your 3 favourite picks to avoid overwhelm and be aware that the size needs to deliver the right scale and proportion for the overall look of the room.

Tufted beds with storage and upholstered headboards are still in style. They provide a great way to add interest and texture with the fabric you choose. Here’s where you can bring in some fun patterns to add character and set the tone of your decor style. Fun, bold patterns, when done right, can be restful too. If your walls are already busy with wallpaper consider a plain pattern with lots of texture for interest.

For a low bed frame try the popular slatted headboards. They give a more rustic, relaxed feel to the space. So pretty!

Popular Master Bedroom Paint Colours

I’m confident in saying 90% of my clients ask for their bedroom to have a calm, relaxed and peaceful paint colour. This is your personal sanctuary that needs your personal expression.

If you like stronger colours to set a moody romantic feel or to perk you up in the morning, then go for it. Try the darker colours like some of the deep sage greens and regal blues or the newer terracotta and reddish browns for warmer tones. Consider deeper colours on an accent wall so you don’t feel too closed in but still get the drama of the darker hues with the contrast of lighter walls and trim.

That fifth wall is waiting for some colour too. You could try a dark blue ceiling to release a chemical that produces tranquility. I think blue is still one the most popular bedroom colours. It makes us think of the sky or the ocean - two very calming thoughts to have.

White walls with a more vivid accent wall has a “wow” factor for sure. Neutral bedroom colours are the go to classics. You can’t go too wrong with white, taupe, ivory, grey and some black. These are your backdrop for pops of colour in your accessories.

Our own award winning master bedroom has the neutrals mentioned above and a monochromatic style with a very subtle hint of soft pink in two accessory points. Here’s the video I shot shortly before my entry was submitted when the room was all dressed and pretty.

If you’re true to the calm and serene, try pastel tones of blues, lavenders, soft yellows and greens. These softer colours work with almost any design style. If your room is a bit smaller, these are recommended as your go-to colours.

Bedroom Flooring

Chances are your flooring is a fixed element in your room, unless you’re lucky enough to be starting from scratch or doing a full reno and ripping out the existing floors.

A good decorator will always look at the fixed elements in a space to help choose the best paint and decor palette for that room. Working with the right undertones is key to bringing it all together.

If you have wood floors and the room feels a little empty, ground the space and warm things up with an area rug. If your room feels too cramped, you can take away any rugs to open things up or change the flooring to a lighter colour for the same affect.

A Quick Guide To Bedroom Lighting

Bedroom lighting is all about layering to get the best light for your room. Strike a balance between task, ambient, and accent lighting to be able to create the perfect mood or activity by simply flipping the switch.

Ambient is your general lighting that can be from the natural light the window provides to any type of ceiling fixture - flush mount, chandelier, pendant - or floor lamps.

Task lighting is usually matching bedside lamps, low pendants on either side of the bed, sconce lights or directional wall mounted task lights.

Accent lights are meant to draw your eye to a certain feature in your room. You might have a fabulous piece of art you want to highlight. On its own, an accent light can set a cozy feel. Get this lighting from recessed ceiling lights, tape lights and wall scones.

Let’s Talk Dimmers

What is a dimmer you ask? They’re those little gadgets you connect to a light switch to be able to lower the intensity and brightness of the light fixture. These are great for any bedroom when you’re winding down and getting ready for sleep.

Bedroom Storage Furniture And Ideas

Storage in your bedroom will range from all the goodies in or on your night tables, to whatever is stuffed in those dresser drawers and the closet. It is a great process to include a good purge and organize in your master bedroom ideas, one that you can stick to in the days ahead.

If you have a smaller space, every bit of storage you can find is gold. Bedside tables with drawers, storage bed frames for seasonal clothes or extra linens, well planned shelving and hanging options in the walk-in closet. And don’t forget the valuable real estate under your bed!

I shared some good storage solutions I incorporated in our own bedroom that has a smaller footprint than we were used to in our previous home. Check out the video above if you missed it. Downsizing for us means keeping only what is necessary and keeping on top of the clutter that finds it’s way back in when we’re not looking.

Bedroom Decor And Accessories

This is where the real fun always starts for me. Laying in the foundational pieces like the bed, dresser and night stands is the beginning of a great room. Now we dress it up to transform it into something special, cozy, romantic or whatever else you might specify on your wish list.

Here’s a quick list of items you might like to add to your bedroom.

  • Art Deco glam with curves and velvets

  • Throw blanket for cold feet, around chilly shoulders, at nap time, and to add a pop of colour and contrast

  • Toss pillows, those oh so pretty extras that most men hate because they don’t have any real function, and maybe the don’t. However, they add so much style to your bedroom, strengthen a great colour palette and help bring your eye to that all important focal point. Try a couple of sets of pillow shams together with smaller toss pillows in front. They’re the fun items that every bed should have.

  • Show stopper lamps or a pretty chandelier can add a special touch. This is a nice place to add some metal finishes for a bit of interest.

  • Artwork that is large enough to impact a wall, ornate mirrors, tapestries or quilts hung on the wall if that’s your style.

  • Area rugs for some texture and colour. Try about 2/3rds of the bed on top of the rug for size.

  • Plants bring living colour, purify the air and in general look great in almost any room. We are seeing so much more of them in decor trends right now. Try easy ones like dracaena or pathos.

  • Something personal that expresses you and you alone. A gift that was given that has special meaning, framed photos of places you have visited or people you love, something you’ve made or collected. I have two of these in our bedroom: gifted bird prints from Newfoundland and a handcrafted JuJu hat that reminds us of our African travels.

If you incorporate even a few of my master bedroom ideas 2021 is offering, I’m certain you’ll have a great end result. Sweet dreams!
