Creating A Home Prayer Room
/An ideal way to make a designated place of retreat from the busyness of the day that is peaceful and welcomes the presence of God if you’re a believer, or whomever you pray to, is by creating a home prayer room. Quiet you mind, your soul and your spirit here, posturing yourself before God.
A larger house or the tiniest apartment can offer a special space for prayer and worship with a little forethought and organization. You’ll want your home prayer room to be pleasing to the eye, quieting to the mind and soul, and functional at the same time. Often the very same elements I bring to any decorating project.
Where Is The Best Place To Pray At Home?
While walking through your home looking for the best place to create this special room, there are a few things to consider.
I like to assess the light in the room. The more natural light your home prayer room has, the more likely you’ll be to experience a better connection to nature and to God. You can’t really separate one from the other.
You’ll want to think about how much privacy your chosen space will offer. If you don’t live alone, try to find a space away from the main living areas in your home. People chatting or the sound of the television are huge distractions. Any unwanted noise or interruption will be a real hinderance to your quiet time and the ability to connect in prayer.
Not having a specific room just for prayer doesn’t mean you have to do without. Multi purpose rooms are more popular and needed more than ever now, as we found out during the pandemic.
Many forced to work from home found it was actually a good thing and continue the practice today. Home offices popped up in spare bedrooms, our own personal bedrooms, at the dining table and anywhere else a little space could be eked out when there wasn’t a specific room available. You get where I’m going here.
A place of prayer can be a designated zone in an existing room. My own is in my office where I have a comfy side chair, a little table and reading lamp, and one shelf on my unit that holds my Bible, related books, journals and candles. I love to keep a candle burning on my desk during both work and prayer times. It keeps me settled and quiets my mind to focus on whatever is at hand.
Some people clear out an entire closet and have created some pretty awesome quiet places of prayer and meditation. You can add extra lighting, and maybe even take the closet doors off completely. This is a good solution when you need to chose a multi-purpose room. It just takes a little more creative thinking and you’re there.
How To Set Up A Prayer Room
Decluttering and Cleaning The Space
You’ve found that quiet space away from the main hubbub of others living in the home, one that might even have a nice amount of natural light. Now what?
Once you’ve made the choice for creating your home prayer room, it’s time to prepare it. I’d recommend starting with a good session of decluttering and cleaning. A good purging starts with taking out any items that are no longer used or are unnecessary. This is the time to be ruthless in your decisions and let things go.
Next, do a really thorough cleaning. Mop or vacuum the floors, dust down the walls and surfaces, wipe the trim and baseboards, clean the windows and let that light shine in. Giving light fixtures and lamps a good cleaning will help to brighten the space as well.
Take advantage of the decluttering and cleaning time to reflect on your spiritual journey. Think about your spiritual goals and what you want to achieve through prayer and mediation. How will this space help you reach those goals?
How To Decorate A Prayer Room
Now that the room is clutter free and sparkling clean, it’s time to decorate. One of my favourite things to do!
The decorating process is the same as for any other room. The finishes and accessories will be more specific, of course. The goal is to create a space that is both calming and inspiring.
Here are some of my best decorating tips for creating your home prayer room:
choose a calming colour scheme - calming soft blues, greens, warm whites and light greige tones are good choices
white is considered a symbol of purity, light, redemption and holiness - just a side note
lighting is important and I’ve already mentioned natural light - do consider installing a dimmer switch for artificial light so you can freely adjust the lighting to your preferences
use natural materials to create a sense of serenity and that all important connection to nature - bring in accessories make of stone, wood or wicker, and always add plants if possible
add artwork that has a spiritual significance or that inspires you - this could be a beautiful nature scene photo or a painting of a cross
frame your favourite prayers or inspirational verses on the wall
include really comfortable seating that allows you to relax and stay focused on your prayers - a cushioned chair, maybe a meditation cushion or comfy area rug for those times you want to stretch right out on the floor and lose yourself in the spirit
What should be in a prayer room?
Now you might be thinking about what to put in a prayer room. You might want to include other furniture and accessories in addition to the comfortable seating. Here are some prayer room ideas to inspire you:
consider a prayer altar - a small table or dedicated shelf space for prayer items like your candle, your prayer book or Bible, or even a rosary if you use one
prayer altars can be important touch points to help prepare yourself for prayer and meditation
I’ve already mentioned a bookshelf where you keep more of the things mentioned for the prayer altar - it keeps the clutter at bay when you have a designated space for them
a pretty wicker basket to corral everything is a great substitute to a shelf and will add one of those natural elements to the space as well - wicker basket on the shelf is a win win
a sound system to play calming music, worship songs, or guided meditation - I use the Christian Abide one and love it. It’s great for helping you fall asleep - another side note for you
Create A Prayer Wall
A prayer wall is a wonderful spot to create a visual of all your prayer requests. You will be inspired to pray for others who need healing, encouragement, restoration in relationships etc. You’ll likely pray for your own needs and your family and close friends.
Visual reminders to keep praying for all of these things is good for me and I think might be the same for you. And it’s super rewarding to see God move in a particular situation you’ve been interceding for. It keeps us encouraged and who doesn’t need some of that?
Your prayer wall can be post it notes, a simple white board or cork board, a rustic twine with clothespins holding notes. I’ve seen some create a board of nails that the answered prayer request note gets poked onto. It’s pretty effective too.
Make Time For Prayer
I so hope that you incorporate some of these ideas and get going on creating a home prayer room for yourself. You might even find some things here to enhance the prayer space you already have.
The ideal is to set aside time every day to pray and mediate and connect with God in your prayer room. There’s no rule here that says it has to be that frequent. Life gets busy, I know. I will say any time spent in focused prayer is an empowering experience where I find peace, answers to challenges I’m facing, and often encouragement to share with others that I’m praying for.
I believe that creating a home prayer room will enhance and guide your spiritual journey and my prayer for you is that God will bless you, shine His face upon you, be gracious to you and most of all that He will give you great peace.
He knows you, He sees you, He hears you.
I’ll personally pray over your prayer room and bless your home!
